I am planning to start homeschooling Brother Monkey next week. Daddy Monkey is starting his fall classes… so I figured that we could start too. I have to confess… I have NO CLUE what I am getting us into. I went to public elementary school and private high school. I taught in the public school system. I know how to organize a class of 30 four year olds, but the idea of teaching my own children is extremely overwhelming!!!!

I went to the Southeast Home School Expo a few weeks ago, hoping to get some ideas. I got a curriculum… that’s a start right? I decided to get the first grade from My Father’s World. Brother Monkey is only five, but he’s ready for first grade. I at least know that much. At first I made the decision to home school because I knew that if I had a child like Brother in my class as a teacher, I wouldn’t know what to do with him. He is all boy… wiggily, loud, always on the move… and he is really smart. Kids like him either become behavior problems, get bored or get lost in the cracks. I did come away from the Homeschool Expo with more of a vision of why I want to homeschool. Throughout the Bible, the education of children is the parents’ responsibility- You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. Deuteronomy 11:19. I went to a few workshops that solidified my decision as well.

I have the materials…

I have the vision…

But still… I have NO CLUE what I am doing. I mean… How do I schedule my day? How structured to I have to be? What am I going to do with Sister and Baby Monkey? I suppose it is okay if I don’t get it all right. I have to be okay with not getting it right all the time. I will try to share what I learn here. Feel free to send tips that have worked for you!
