It’s Give Away Time!!!

Have you seen this new series put out by the creator of Veggie Tales? It’s called “Buck Denver Asks What’s in the Bible” and takes kids (and adults) cover to cover through the Bible. Buck Denver is a News Man who is curious about the Bible.  I must say, I have learned so much from watching these videos and so have my kids (ages 2, 4, 7, and 9). It holds the attention of each one of them in a different way.

The videos are filled with colorful characters in the form of puppets. There’s someone for everyone. My personal favorites are Clive and Ian (explorers), Captain Pete (who sounds suspiciously like Pa Grape) and Sunday School Lady with her magic Flannel Graph!

I was a HUGE fan of Veggie Tales back in the day (before I even had kids), but I have to tell you that I was a little frustrated as I saw the series moving away from Bible stories and more into Moral stories. I mean, having good morals is all well and good, but nothing beats the Bible!

When I heard that Phil Vischer (creator of Veggie Tales and What’s in the Bible) had come out with this new series, I was a little skeptical and really didn’t give it much attention. A friend of mine was telling me about the videos and that she and her girls had been watching them and really were learning cool things about the Bible. I asked if we could borrow the videos and was hooked the moment we started watching. My kids LOVE them! They often ask to watch them and can’t wait until we get a new one.

Big Brother and Big Sister really love the word play and silly jokes that can be found throughout. The videos are fast paced and change scenery often to keep the attention of the kids. Sometimes it can move too fast for little ones (like preschool age), but for the most part, they are a win in my book. Little Sis and Baby Girl like the songs.

The songs are super creative and help you learn words like “pentateuch” and “septuagint.”

We watched Volume 1 recently. I like that it doesn’t just jump into Creation and Adam and Eve. The video has two 25 minute episodes. You get to join a little boy name Michael as he is watching the DVDs on a car trip to visit his grandmother. His commentary is cute and clever.

In the first episode of Volume 1, you learn what the Bible is, who put it together, how it tells the whole story of God’s rescue plan. This episode sets the stage for the rest of the series. Episode 2 is about who wrote the Bible, how God inspired the writers to tell the story of God’s rescue plan. It introduces the book of Genesis and explains how it sets the stage for all the events of history.

A couple of things did occur in the video of which I was not a fan. In episode 1, they ask “What is the Bible.” They have a scientist explain that it is paper with a leather cover, etc. Sunday School Lady then comes in and says “Never send a scientist to do a Sunday School teacher’s job.”  The series does a good job later on incorporating Science in a positive light, but I think this was an unnecessary cut. Another item was how the series skirts around the issue of young earth/ old earth. They do not take a stand either way, but say there are many theories… and really, that’s fine. The goal of the series is the Big Picture of God’s Rescue Plan.

I think Phil Vischer is a super talented story teller and is very creative in how he presents HUGE, GROWN UP concepts in a ways that children can understand. They may not understand everything that they are hearing, but they are hearing it, soaking it in, storing it away and it will stick with them.

I am actually so excited about this series of videos that we have ordered the VBS for our church to use this summer.

I am also excited to offer Volume 1 to One of YOU!!!!!! If you’d like to win a copy of Volume 1 of What’s in the Bible, simply leave a comment below and let me know your favorite resource for teaching the Bible to your children!

Obviously the Bible is the best resource to learn the Bible but I find all kinds of great resources online to help explain topics to my girls. That’s where I heard about this series. We are hoping to eventually get all the videos and we’re going to use them to enhance our Bible Study portion of homeschooling next year!

So far our Bible teaching has consisted of me reading from a children’s Bible … we’ll get more structured as she gets older. I’d love to win this DVD, though!

I would love to have this to watch with my girls! I couldn’t find any terms and conditions – I am in the UK – can I still enter?

I borrowed the first DVD from a friend last year. I was impressed. Like you I hadn’t been that happy with Veggie Tales before this.

Lately I’ve been using the ABC’s For Godly Boys/Girls. Over the years I’ve used a variety of things – stories and print offs from a church’s website, reading through a kid’s Bible at night, videos, etc. As the kids get older, what I have been able to use changes. My favorite time, thought, was helping them learn the 12 disciples by memory, then we started on the books of the New Testament. I was amazed by how quickly they were able to memorize things as preschoolers that I didn’t even think about memorizing till I was older than 12.

I turn to the Bible first, but Cubbies (our awana program a church) has made learning verses and concepts so much fun for my daughter. I’ve try to expand on what she is already learning each week in Cubbies. This would be an excellent resource especially since we will be homeschooling. (I have liked your facebook page)

I love just sharing the Bible with my children and answering questions they may have. We also enjoy Veggie tales and reading through their children’s Bibles.

Favorite resource is the Bible, of course 🙂 Other than that we use our YouVersion Bible app, the Kids version has videos for kids to watch and great little lessons for them. My version has plans I can choose to study with my son—right now we are going through the book of Daniel !
