We recently received the DVD, Torchlighters: The John Wesley Story, from FishFlix.com film to review for the TOS review crew. We’ve been reading off and on this year about various heroes of the faith. I was particularly interested in sharing the story of John Wesley with my children because we often visit Saint Simons Island Georgia. There is a church on the island that is tied to John Wesley. I often point it out to the kids and now they have a frame of reference for who I am talking about.

Torchlighters: The John Wesley Story
We received a DVD geared for ages 8-12 all about the story of John Wesley. The video is animated and is about 30 minutes long and very professionally produced. The video documents John’s early life as he is miraculously saved from his family’s burning home. His mother sees that he is set apart for a greater purpose after this tragic event. John struggles to live out his special purpose through his own merits and when he finds that he cannot, he embraces God’s saving grace. This video is a great introduction to John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement.
The 30 minute video is great, but it is not all there is to it. The extra goodies include:
– a 55 minute documentary about John Wesley
– a Comprehensive leader’s guide in PDF form
– a Reproducible student guide in PDF form
– English and Spanish languages in subtitles
The Torchlighter Series includes several other videos featuring various heroes of the faith. Each of the videos come with these extras. They each allow for an extended study.
The lesson guide for Torchlighters: The Story of John Wesley includes four sessions:
1. Saved by Grace
2. Growing in Righteousness
3. Walking the Talk
4. Galloping with the Gospel
The kids (ages 3, 5, 8, and 10) watched the video together. We discussed John Wesley and the events of his life when we were finished. I printed out the coloring sheets and word search for the older two.
What We Thought
I love having activities to supplement our school. Honestly, you could build a whole curriculum using the Torchlighter Video Series. You could build unit studies with each video as the foundation. The extension activities in the student guide include memorization charts, fill in the blank pages, coloring pages, word searches, and question and answer pages relating to the story.
My kids LOVE word searches and coloring pages. I have one child that thrives on question and answer and finds pleasure in completing worksheets. I was excited when I found there was more than just a 3o minute video involved in this review. I really like the leader’s guide and student pages. I like that we can take the learning from the screen into our home. I would love to see what else we can find with Torchlighters.
The animation is a little dated (compared to today’s children’s shows), but my kids didn’t seem to mind. It held their attention and taught them about John Wesley in a way that they could see come to life.
